Fencing included in Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games

Okay, so it’s not a full fencing game, but fencing will be one of the events in the upcoming Wii release of Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games.  Ars Technica has the full list of events as Sonic and Mario go head to head.

I don’t have a Wii, but once this comes out I may have to buy one to perform the obligitory playability review.

Some members of the forum just have too much time on their hands.

This one made me do a spit-take.

Getting regional tournament reviews

My next project is to get more of the club owners or tournament organizers to submit write-ups of the tournaments for publication on fencing.net and via my Technorati Profile.  It’s an easy way for the club and tournament to build PR, especially with the number of non-fencers who come by the site looking for more information on the sport.

Actual summary write-ups do well to promote - and work great in conjunction with the results feed from AskFRED.  We already saw a lot of hits going over to a club when their link was tagged on an article that they wrote for us.  It’s easy promotion and Google loves the links we toss out for other clubs.

K-Pro Blades out for a while

The Kolobkov Pro epee blades are going to stay out of stock for a little while longer.

The Russian / Ukrainian forges are closed for the month of August and now Lammet are not going to be finishing up the next batch of Kolobkov Pro blades for Leon Paul until after the World Championships in October!  So, if you wanted a K-Pro, ask for it as a Christmas gift.

Oversimplifying the counterattack and refereeing in foil

I just checked out this LiveJournal blog that offered a perspective of fencing as sport vs. martial art.  I took a little bit of an issue with one of the statements:

Comparing today’s smallsword lesson to Thursday’s foil lesson highlights the difference. One example: a counterattack (attack into opponent’s attack without parrying) that causes a double touch can be a good idea in foil. It results in the ref calling a halt to figure out who had right of way - even if I’m hit I might still score a touch. Counterattacking in smallsword is stupid because unless I’ve taken action to get my opponent’s point away from me, I’m still dead :P
