How to Market Fencing
You want fencing in the press? Want more coverage? Turns out that you have to go to work and go out and get it.
Tim Morehouse and Jason Rogers have been putting on the full court PR press since they got back from Beijing. I’ve seen lots of pictures of Tim and Jason from various NYC parties but tonight I saw something that I wasn’t expecting.

Tim Morehouse and Jason Rogers in ESPN the Magazine.
It’s a small bit at the bottom of the “Page 2″ column. Patrick Cain asks Tim and Jason how “little known fencers end up running with the “in” crowd”. Tim and Jason point to their creativity in getting out there and the vision of getting out of their own network and into the greater socialite network.
It’s working for them too. I know of a couple of projects in the works and they have the potential for advancing their personal goals for more secure funding for this Olympic cycle as well as more visibility for fencing.
Now, here is your takeaway:
Get out of your comfort zone and talk to people. Go where the action is. Be bold.
Tim and Jason did it. Now they get a non Olympic year mention of fencing in ESPN’s magazine.
What will be your story?

How long before we see one of them on Dancing with the Stars a la Shawn Johnson and Apollo Ono?

I think what they are doing is great for the sport. As I said in a response to a coaches survey some weeks ago, fencing needs personalities, characters even. Michael Jordan put basketball back on top after years of languishing behind baseball and football, the same for Mike Tyson and boxing, Tiger Woods and golf. Did anyone under 40 really watch golf before he came along? Mike Ichanelli and Kevin Van Dam are doing the same for bass fishing now. Fencing needs its stars too and so many of these young people deserve their spotlight. Just remember me when the endorsements come rolling in, lol.
